Three die in windstorms, 28 provinces affected

The windstorms over the past 15 days have killed three people and damaged around 6,000 houses in 28 provinces, according to the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.Director-general Chatchai Promlert said the death toll was from March 14 to Wednesday, when the windstorms hit 104 districts in 28 provinces, damages in various stages to 5,999 houses. The Northeast was the hardest hit, with a total of 17 provinces affected by strong winds, followed by five provinces in the Central region, four in the North and two in the East.  The department has coordinated with other government agencies to provide essential items and house-repair materials to the victims. Its officials will also evaluate the damage to determine financial aid for them.Mr Chatchai said the department had instructed its officials to be on alert for possible storms on Wednesday and Thursday as weather forecasts indicated heavy rain in South. The rain in other parts of Thailand is likely to decrease.
